Figuras que posan bajo su propio foco. Figures posing under their own spotlight.
Todas posan.
My paintings are stages. Against smoky backgrounds, a spotlight cuts out figures performing for a gaze we cannot see. Some keep the profile of a portrait; others have already become creatures: dolls, beasts, limbs turned into objects. All of them are posing.
The Baroque already knew this scene. Calderón called the world a great theatre, and Caravaggio lit his figures like actors. Today everyone has their own spotlight: we are all protagonists and almost no one is the audience. This is where my painting begins, a psychological baroque with no screens or icons, made only of light, pose and shadow.
There is also a floating hat, a cigarette still burning, an angel made of hands. The serious and the ridiculous share the stage, just as they share our heads.
Light decides who exists. In my paintings the spotlight is a form of power: it isolates the figure, forces it to hold the pose and leaves everything else in the dark.
In Latin, persona was the actor's mask. My faces split, overlap and graft onto one another. The character covers the person, and sometimes the person peers out through a gap in the character.
What stays outside the light is also at work. Cast shadows, axes, measuring lines and vanishing points: the machinery that holds the scene up, in plain sight for anyone who wants to look.
My creatures are not machines of the future. They are extensions of memories, desires and fears, the shape of what I absorb once it has blended with who I am.
